A Local Mum’s Journey to Reclaim Her Body and Mind

It started with the mirror.
Emily stood there one early September morning, brushing her teeth, juggling a half-packed daycare bag with one hand and mentally sorting school lunches with the other. Her eyes looked tired. Her shoulders felt heavy. And her breath caught somewhere high in her chest, like it hadn’t reached her belly in weeks.
She wasn’t unwell. She wasn’t unhappy. But something was… off.“Is this just how it is now?” she thought. Life was good—two beautiful kids, a supportive partner, a job she mostly loved. But winter had pulled her under. She was stuck in survival mode: school runs, reheated coffee, work emails at 9 pm, a cold, stiff neck that wouldn't quit. The word “self-care” felt like a cruel joke.
That morning, standing in her bathroom, she felt something inside her whisper: It doesn’t have to be this way.
A few days later, at a weekend park BBQ, a friend mentioned a new place she’d been going for a massage.“Honestly,” she said, “I went in for tight shoulders and ended up crying on the table—in a good way. It was like my body had been holding on to things I didn’t even know.”
Emily laughed, intrigued. “I wouldn’t even know where to start.”Her friend handed her a card. North Brisbane Remedial Massage and Natural Therapies.
That night, after her kids fell asleep, she finally looked it up. Words like “remedial,” “nurturing,” “pregnancy-safe facials,” and “lymphatic drainage” caught her attention. There was a softness to the site that felt different—this didn’t seem like just another clinic. And then she saw the words: “We believe in holding space for healing—body, mind, and spirit.”
The following Wednesday, Emily stood outside the clinic in Ferny Hills, half-expecting to be overwhelmed by incense or silence. Instead, she was greeted by warm light, calming music, and the scent of orange blossom and lemongrass.
She was met at the front desk by Jess, the founder, whose quiet confidence and gentle warmth made her feel immediately at ease.“We’re so glad you’re here,” Jess said, simply. “Let’s work together to help your body feel safe again.”
That sentence stuck with her.
Emily’s journey didn’t happen overnight. But each session felt like another thread gently untangled.
Her first treatment focused on her upper back, where the weight of motherhood, office work, and stress had camped out like unwelcome guests. Her therapist worked with precision—firm, but never painful. By the end, she could move her neck again. But more than that, she left feeling a strange lightness in her chest. She hadn’t realised how tightly she’d been holding herself.
“I didn’t even know what that was,” she laughed later, when booking her second treatment. But Jess had explained how gentle, rhythmic movements could help her body release fluid retention, support immunity, and even assist with fatigue and hormonal changes. The result? Emily floated out. Her skin looked brighter. Her rings fit more loosely.
It had been years since she’d let someone care for her skin. The pregnancy-safe organic facial felt more like a ceremony than a treatment. With certified organic products and techniques tailored to her sensitive, postpartum skin, it was like a reset button for her face—and her self-esteem.
On a quiet Friday evening, Emily joined a small-group yoga session. No mirrors. No fancy gear. Just movement, breath, and presence. She cried during savasana—and felt no shame. It was the first time in months she had been still long enough to hear herself.
One morning, about six weeks into her journey, Emily found herself pausing outside the clinic again. But this time, she wasn’t worn out or nervous. She was smiling.
Her life hadn’t changed dramatically—there were still school lunches and work stress and toddler tantrums. But she had changed. She was sleeping better. Her skin glowed. Her shoulders didn’t ache every day. She had learned that healing isn’t always dramatic—it’s often quiet, consistent, and deeply personal.
She now saw self-care not as indulgent, but as essential. Not a luxury, but a return.
“I feel like I’ve come home to myself,” she told Jess during her final facial in the spring package. Jess smiled. “That’s what we’re here for.”
And with that, Emily did what women often do when they find something that works—she told her friends. The mum at daycare pickup looked exhausted. The colleague quietly navigates IVF. The neighbour is recovering from surgery.
Maybe you’re a little like Emily. Maybe you’ve been running on empty for too long. Maybe your body aches in ways you’ve learned to ignore. Maybe you can’t remember the last time someone asked how you’re doing—and really listened.
We see you.
